That was not good, apparently. Angie was very insistent on this.

“These women are forcing Cole into something he clearly doesn’t want.” Angie gestured angrily with her bottle of ginger beer, partly at Scott, and partly at the air, or maybe at the idea of the knitting group. “I mean, I asked Cole two months ago if he knew of any single gay guys in town for you—”

Scott raised his head. “You did what?”

Angie rolled on, feisty with a bunch of soda in her. “Because you would be so happy if you found someone who actually cared about you. So happy, Scotty. And Cole said there was no one in town good enough for you. That means that clearly there is no one in town good enough for Cole either. He has good taste.” She clinked her bottle against the glass of sparkling water with lime Scott was holding between his knees so it wouldn’t spill on her couch. “Yet those women are all up in his business. And smug about it too. I feel like they’re judging you somehow, you know? They want to set someone up, so they go with the wealthy widower instead of the studly young firefighter, because somehow you aren’t serious? Argh! They’re like those moms who brag about their kids learning French, and it’s like, of course they can learn French! You can afford to hire a tutor! It doesn’t make them better than anybody else’s kids!”

Angie paused to take a breath. “Anyway. Now they’re worse, because I guess he actually liked one of them. Or so they say.”

Scott looked down at his lap, or really at his hands, which he had carefully positioned on his lap so he wouldn’t touch anything while his fingernails were drying. Bobby had seen a cartoon or something that had made him want to paint his nails. Some kids at school had been dicks about it. Bobby had been upset, which meant Becks had been upset, so he and Angie had sat down after dinner and let Becks give them manicures.

Becca had also chosen the shades. Scott didn’t think Spring Mint was his color, or Midnight Indigo, but at least he didn’t have the Galaxy Black and Shamrock Green Angie did.

Becks was in bed asleep. Bobby—with blue nails—was in his room, in bed but probably reading. Neither was around to see Scott improve Becca’s paint job. He picked at the polish that had ended up more on his skin than on his fingernail while his sister complained about Kathy and her minions.

Angie shook her head so hard her short ponytail swung back and forth. “I highly doubt Cole likes this person in the way they think he does. Their judgment is obviously suspect. I mean, they find every single gay—I bet they didn’t include bisexual—man in a thirty-mile radius, but not you? Ludicrous.”

Scott jumped and nearly spilled his water. Angie stopped to stare at him. Scott picked up his sparkling water—minding his nails—and took a long drink. “Uh, no,” he said as he leaned forward to set the glass on the coffee table.
